Automation has changed the packaging industry, allowing organizations to enhance productivity and delivery numbers at an ever-increasing rate. As businesses seek to meet the growing demands of consumers, labelling and tracking have become increasingly important tools for improving the packaging process and assuring quality. This real-world (though anonymous) Company has successfully incorporated automation into their labelling process and improved efficiency.

Field of application

When delivering to individual homes, item-level authentication and tracking is critically important to ensure the safety and security of the delivered goods, as well as to provide a way to track an item’s location and delivery status. This is especially critical with valuable or sensitive items.
To verify package integrity and guarantee transparent and secure delivery from the manufacturing site to the end-user location, labels with unique IDs and RFIDs are inserted inside each shipment. These provide fast shipment monitoring and product authentication while also lowering the possibility of counterfeiting.

Requirements

Assurance of the quality and integrity of labels prior to their placement in parcels is critical towards an accurate and secure process.
Due to the growing demand for home delivery, the Company was looking for a faster, automated and integrated solution to cut and control a printed roll labels into single labels ready for insertion in the parcel during the packaging phase, prior to shipment.

Objectives

Automate the cutting process, quality control and RFID control of security labels for e-commerce fashion & high-end brands, focusing on:

  • Automatic cutting;
  • Quality control of code readability, checking for smearing and voids;
  • Integrity control and data matching of 2D code with other print fields;
  • RFID control, ensuring correct programming and readability, coherence with 2D code, and uniqueness (no duplicates);
  • Separation of GOOD / NOT GOOD labels based on real time quality/integrity checks;
  • Reporting jobs completed, discharged and null labels.

Tecnau solution

Tecnau implemented its CutReady solution for the Company consisting of an Unwinder, a Cutter and a Shingling Conveyor, enhanced by AceLab vision system for print quality control. The solution efficiently produces groups of sheets in variable lengths, properly separated and delivered on the conveyor. The system includes integrated features such as:

  • Quality control
  • RFID control
  • Sheet diverter
  • Reporting system

Tecnau added value

  • Assessment of customer requirements
  • Feasibility study
  • Recommended end-to-end solutions
  • Line design & system integrations
    • Tecnau designed & engineered modules: Unwinder, Cutter, Delivery Conveyor
    • Selection among existing technologies in the market: AceLab Quality inspection, integrity and RFID control
    • Reporting: connection among Tecnau and AceLab recorded data
  • Production line assembly
  • In house testing
  • Delivery, installation, training, commissioning
  • Production start-up support
